Maria Montessori was born in 1870 in Chiaravelle (Ancona), Italy. Montessori was the first woman to graduate from the University of Rome La Sapienza Medical school, becoming the first female doctor in Italy.
Her early research into education surrounded children with special needs whom she termed “unhappy little ones”. After several of her students passed the State examinations with average or better results, she was able to demonstrate the great potential of all children. She later went on to become the Minister of Education in Italy, where she could further her work and implement the ‘Montessori’ system of education throughout the country.
